If you're a gamer, a work-from-home professional, or an avid internet user, then an unlimited data plan is your best option, ensuring you've got the bandwidth to indulge in your favorite activities.
In Canada, “unlimited data” is a bit of a misnomer. Despite the name, every unlimited plan has a full-speed data limit. When that limit is exceeded, carriers either charge overage fees or slow users’ speeds.
In this guide, we'll break down the best unlimited data plans in Canada and how you can find the best plan for your unique needs.
How we picked the best unlimited data plans
-
Price & value
We ensured you’re getting the most bang for your buck without sacrificing on the essentials to keep you connected. We also made sure to avoid carriers charging you for data overages. -
Full-speed data
Unlimited plans throttle (or slow) customer speeds after the customer has exceeded a specified limit. We looked for plans that offer high data caps so you can enjoy the benefits of an unlimited plan, even if it's not truly "unlimited." -
Coverage & network reliability
We evaluated each carrier’s nationwide 4G LTE and 5G coverage to predict your service quality (no dropped calls allowed!). -
Plan extras and perks
If you get free Netflix or a hefty hotspot, we factored those in relative to the cost of the plan.

Best Unlimited Data
Cell Phone Plan
Public Mobile | Unlimited Canada-US Talk + Text + 50GB | $34/month
- Pros: 5G coverage, generous data allotment, coverage in Canada and US
- Cons: Limited-time offer
We love this unlimited deal from Public Mobile, a prepaid MVNO operating on the nationwide Telus network, which offers 5G service to over 70% of Canadians. This unlimited data plan gives you unlimited talk, text, and 50GB of full-speed 5G data for only $34/month.
Several unlimited plans in Canada promise unlimited access but set unreasonably low full-speed data allotments, leaving you monitoring your data or saddled with slower speeds for portions of the month. That's not the case with this Public plan: the 50GB of full-speed data you score is ten times what the average Canadian uses in a single month. If you do go over, you’ll be slowed to 512Kbps, which will slow your downloads pretty significantly. We find Spotify is still useable, but streaming videos from YouTube or Netflix will be almost impossible to watch.

Best Value for Unlimited
Data Cell Phone Plan
Freedom Mobile | 5G Unlimited 100GB CA-US | $50/month
- Pros: Cheap 5G data, generous data allotment, BYOD discount
- Cons: Slower speeds outside of coverage area
Freedom Mobile is Canada’s fourth-largest carrier, offering 5G and 4G LTE plans. This plan is one of the cheapest ways to pick up unlimited 5G data in Canada, offering high-speed connectivity for a fraction of what Bell, Rogers, or Telus charge. Even though the Freedom network is still small compared with the Big Three, this is a great deal if you live in southern Ontario or Quebec, where Freedom's 5G is widely available.
Right now, you can get 100GB of full-speed 5G data for just $50/month.
Methodology: How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans
WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:
- Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it both to other plans from the same carrier, as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
- Full-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you actually need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
- Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
- Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.
Our mobile experts leveraged proprietary data and real-world customer feedback to evaluate the best unlimited data plans in Canada. Best unlimited data plans in Canada: FAQs
Unlimited data plans do offer unlimited data, but each cell phone plan has a limit on how many GBs of full-speed data you get. If a customer exceeds that limit, one of two things happens, depending on the carrier and the plan:
- The carrier charges an overage fee based on the amount of excess data used.
- The carrier significantly slows data speeds for the rest of the month, a practice called “throttling.”

- Telus Unlimited
